The Live Music Capital of the World is mostly known for, well, live music. However, in recent years, the influx of new residents and visitors alike has put this once small town in the Lone Star State on the map for everything from food and drink to nightlife and recreation. It’s no surprise why Austin was ranked by the US News and World Report as fifth in Best Places to Live in the US and first in the Best Places to Live in Texas.
Austin really does have it all, and people the world over seem to be catching on. Since the 2010 Census report, Austin has had a population growth of 34%, giving it the title of the fastest-growing major metro area in the United States. Real estate, especially Downtown Austin real estate, has seen a major uphill median price as well. The median price for a home in Austin in 2021 was up 17.4% compared to the previous year, and most homes were selling above the asking price.
Are you hoping to snag a piece of Downtown Austin real estate or scour Downtown Austin condos in 2022? You’re certainly in good company. Whether you’re in the area looking for your next home or just for fun, you’ll undoubtedly want to check out the local businesses that make Austin what it is. “Keep Austin Weird” with these nine local favorites.
Entertainment
Alamo Drafthouse
Good beer and great films? Say no more! Alamo Drafthouse is a locally owned and operated film house founded in 1997 by two Austinites who wanted to provide just that. Their original location featured a handmade one-screen theater and quickly became a favorite for cinephiles, visiting filmmakers, and locals alike. Though they have moved on from their original Colorado Street location, they still offer independent programming mixed with blockbuster favorites. They have also branched out to a number of other markets all over the country.
The Elephant Room

If you’re after jazz music and cold drinks set in an unpretentious basement setting, look no further than The Elephant Room. Originally the basement was dug out for a parking garage, but when the diggers found “the largest archeological discovery of mastodon bones west of the Mississippi,” the Elephant Room was born. You won’t want to miss this local gem!
ACL Live at The Moody Theater
Don’t sleep on ACL Live! As one of the most popular venues in Austin, with over 100 shows a year, concerts in this space sell out quickly. ACL Live is also home to the longest-running music series in American TV history, Austin City Limits.
Speakeasy
If you’re in search of the most traditional Austin experience, look no further than Speakeasy. Speakeasy is complete with three levels offering live music at the Music Lounge, good vibes in the Bowling Mezzanine, and a 1920s Prohibition-era experience in the Kabaret Room. You can also check out Terrace59, the rooftop bar, and the lounge.
